Prime Video has cancelled It’s Not Like That after one season. The faith-based family drama starred Scott Foley as Malcolm, a recently widowed pastor and father of three, and Erinn Hayes as Lori, a newly divorced mother of two. The series followed the longtime friends as they navigated single parenthood, grief and the possibility that their bond could become something romantic.

The cancellation comes after the first season launched globally on Prime Video earlier this year, following an initial debut through Wonder Project’s Prime Video add-on channel. Produced by Wonder Project, the faith-focused studio also behind House of David, the series also starred J.R. Ramirez, Caleb Baumann, Cary Christopher, Michaela Russell, Cassidy Paul and Liv Lindell.

The first season ended in March, meaning its finale now serves as the series ending. For viewers hoping to see what came next for Malcolm and Lori, that makes the cancellation a frustrating one, especially with the show’s central relationship left unresolved. The decision is also a little surprising. While Prime Video has not released viewership figures, It’s Not Like That appeared at No. 9 on the streamer’s first weekly global series Top 10 in June and has continued to feature on the daily US series chart, where it recently sat at No. 5.

For CultureCues, this is a shame for anyone who connected with It’s Not Like That. One-season cancellations are always tough, especially when a show has a building romance like Malcolm and Lori’s at its centre. This felt like a series with room to grow, and it would have been nice to see where their story went next.

It’s Not Like That Season 1 is streaming on Prime Video.
