Universal has released the trailer for One Night Only, a new high-concept rom-com starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. Directed by Will Gluck, whose past credits include Easy A, Friends With Benefits and Anyone But You, the film is set in a slightly fictionalised New York City where, for one night of the year, single people are legally allowed to have sex. Barbaro plays Allie, a hopeful romantic, while Turner plays Owen, who has recently been dumped. Both are looking for something more meaningful than a quick encounter, but their night quickly becomes more complicated than either expected.
The trailer follows Allie and Owen as they spark, separate and keep getting pulled into missteps and side quests across the city, turning one strange rule into a much bigger romantic adventure. Alongside Barbaro and Turner, the cast includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Ben Marshall, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton.
For CultureCues, One Night Only looks like a fun, flirty rom-com with plenty of summer appeal, mixing big-city romance, near-misses and the kind of slightly ridiculous premise that could make it very easy to root for. With Gluck behind the camera and Barbaro and Turner leading the story, it has the makings of a rom-com that could be exactly the kind of easy, feel-good watch summer cinema needs.
One Night Only arrives in cinemas on 7 August.
