Euphoria is officially over, and yes, we may need a minute with that one. After seven years, three seasons and 26 episodes, HBO has confirmed that the drama will not return for a fourth season. Creator, writer and director Sam Levinson announced the news on Popcast, The New York Times’ music podcast, with HBO later confirming that the season 3 finale was the show’s final episode.

That means the season 3 closer, titled “In God We Trust”, now stands as the series finale.

The news may not come as a huge surprise to fans, even if it still feels strange to see it confirmed. Euphoria had faced a long gap between seasons 2 and 3, with several of its cast members becoming even bigger names during the break and production repeatedly shifting along the way. Zendaya had also suggested in interviews that she believed the third season would bring Rue’s story, and the wider series, to a close.

The HBO drama followed Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, and the people around her as they struggled with addiction, love, friendship, loss and the pressure of trying to understand themselves under constant scrutiny. Season 3 moved the story beyond high school with a time jump, allowing the series to look at what happens when the past follows these characters into adulthood.

The wider cast included Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Martha Kelly, Chloe Cherry, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Toby Wallace and Colman Domingo.

For CultureCues, Euphoria ending after season 3 feels like the close of a major TV chapter. The series was controversial at times, and its final run will no doubt divide opinion, but there is no denying how huge that first season became. It got people talking in a way few teen dramas manage, and it helped launch several of its cast into a much bigger spotlight. Whether fans feel satisfied by the ending or not, this does feel like a natural place to leave it, with the actors now moving into the next stage of their careers.

We’ll be sharing our full Euphoria season 3 review on CultureCues soon.

Euphoria is available to stream on HBO Max.
