Filming has begun on Dept. Q Season 2 in Edinburgh, with Aisling Franciosi, Greg Wise and Amy Brenneman among the new names joining the Netflix crime drama. Matthew Goode returns as DCI Carl Morck, the difficult but brilliant detective leading a team of investigators from the basement of an Edinburgh police station. Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne and Jamie Sives will also reprise their roles as Akram Salim, Rose Dickson and James Hardy. This is very welcome news, we are already looking forward to it.
The returning cast includes Mark Bonnar, Kate Dickie, Aaron McVeigh and Sanjeev Kohli. Franciosi will play Kimmie, while Wise joins as Derek Powell and Brenneman as Helen. Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Hamish Clark, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, Rebecca Root and Isla Johnston have also been added to the new season.

Season 2 will see Carl and his team investigate a crime hidden within the highest levels of Scottish society. Executive producer Rob Bullock said the case will focus on “rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law”, adding: “Carl, of course, knows otherwise.”
Created by Scott Frank and based on the novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept. Q became a major success for Netflix following its 2025 debut, spending six weeks in the streamer’s Global Top 10.
For CultureCues, the Edinburgh setting was one of the strongest parts of the first season, and this new case sounds ready to take Carl into even darker corners of the city. With cameras rolling and an excellent new cast joining the basement team, we are more than ready to reopen another cold case.
Dept. Q Season 2 will stream on Netflix. A release date has not yet been announced.
