Charlie Hunnam is officially returning to the world of Sons of Anarchy, although not quite in the way fans might expect. FX has ordered a new limited series titled Legends, reuniting Hunnam with several members of the original cast more than a decade after the biker drama came to an end. Rather than bringing Jax Teller back from the dead, the series will see Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal and other familiar faces playing fictionalised versions of themselves after the Sons of Anarchy cast reunites at a fan convention and becomes caught up in a very real threat.
What Is Sons of Anarchy: Legends About?
Legends takes a meta approach to the Sons of Anarchy world, with the original cast reuniting at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended. According to the official description, the line between life and art begins to blur when the fractured group finds itself facing a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they encountered on the series. It means Legends is not a traditional sequel, reboot or prequel, instead using the actors’ real connection to Sons of Anarchy as the starting point for an entirely new thriller.
Is Charlie Hunnam Playing Jax Teller Again?
Hunnam is returning, but he will not be playing Jax Teller again. Instead, he will appear as a fictionalised version of Charlie Hunnam, with the same idea applying to the other returning cast members. Hunnam also created and developed Legends alongside Jonathan Groff and will star and executive produce, with Groff serving as showrunner. The approach also gives the series a way to reunite a cast whose original characters did not all survive the events of Sons of Anarchy.
Which Sons of Anarchy Cast Members Are Returning?
Charlie Hunnam will be joined by Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi, reuniting the actors behind Jax, Clay, Gemma, Tara, Bobby, Chibs, Tig and Juice. More casting is expected to be announced, so there could still be further familiar faces joining the project as it moves towards production.

Is Kurt Sutter Involved in Legends?
Original Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved in Legends, although reports say he gave Hunnam his blessing to move forward with the project. The series was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn also serving as executive producers. FX Productions and 20th Television will produce the limited series.
When Is Sons of Anarchy: Legends Released?
A release date for Legends has not yet been announced. FX has officially ordered the limited series, but production dates and further casting details are still to come. The series will be available through FX and Hulu in the US, with UK viewing details yet to be confirmed.

Is Legends a Sons of Anarchy Reboot?
Legends is better described as a meta spin-off than a reboot or direct sequel, as Hunnam and the returning cast will not be reprising their original characters and the events of Sons of Anarchy remain unchanged. The original series ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014, following Jax Teller and the SAMCRO motorcycle club, before later spawning Mayans M.C., which ran for five seasons from 2018 to 2023.
For CultureCues, this is not the Sons of Anarchy return we expected, but it might actually be a really interesting way to bring everyone back together. Seeing Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, Tommy Flanagan and the rest of the gang reunited is already exciting, and having them play versions of themselves is quite a mad concept, but an intriguing one that gives Legends something completely different to explore. After more than a decade, we are very happy to see this cast together again.
A release date for Legends has not yet been announced.
