Netflix is heading to the rink. The streamer has officially ordered a series adaptation of Icebreaker, based on Hannah Grace’s bestselling romance novel that became a global BookTok sensation and one of the biggest names in the hockey romance genre. The series follows Anastasia Allen, a highly driven figure skater with her sights set on Olympic success, and Nate Hawkins, the captain of the university hockey team who dreams of playing professionally. Their worlds collide when an accident forces their teams to share the same rink, turning an icy rivalry into something far more complicated.
Netflix describes the series as the story of “a transfer gunning for Olympic gold” and a campus hockey star chasing the NHL, with ambition, attraction and competition all thrown into the mix.

Amanda Lasher (Gossip Girl, Togetherness) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Jade Bartlett (Road House, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) joining as co-writer and executive producer. “I love this genre, and it’s been a joy working with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved Icebreaker novel to the screen,” Lasher said. Bartlett added that the story is filled with “ambitious, talented and undeniably sexy characters,” but said the heart of the series comes from the compassion and relationships that sit beneath the romance.
The adaptation will be executive produced by Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan and Mina Lefevre through Unwell Productions. Originally published in 2022, Icebreaker became a major success through BookTok and word-of-mouth recommendations. The novel spent 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times Bestseller List, has sold nearly five million copies worldwide, and has been translated into 24 languages.
For CultureCues, this feels like a no-brainer. Icebreaker has one of the most passionate fanbases in contemporary romance and the timing also feels smart for Netflix. Romance adaptations continue to be a huge draw for streamers, while hockey romance has become one of the hottest corners of BookTok. With Heated Rivalry already proving hugely popular on Crave and HBO Max, and Off Campus doing the same on Prime Video, Icebreaker feels like a natural next move for Netflix’s growing romance slate. We may not know who is playing Anastasia and Nate yet, but safe to say casting announcements can’t come soon enough.
A release date and casting details are yet to be announced.
