The BBC has released the first teaser for Blue Lights Series 4, confirming that the Belfast police drama will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn. The new clip follows Constable Shane Bradley (Frank Blake) as he stops elderly driver David (Trevor Gill) and his passenger Imelda (Rosamund Monteith). The stop quickly proves less eventful than expected when David reveals that his last drink was on Christmas Day… in 2003, and even that was apparently the result of a misunderstanding involving grape juice.

Siân Brooke will return as Grace alongside Martin McCann as Stevie, Katherine Devlin as Annie, Nathan Braniff as Tommy and Blake as Shane. Richard Dormer will also reprise his role as Gerry Cliff after appearing in the first series, with Hannah McClean returning as solicitor Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden as former inspector Jonty. Joanne Crawford, Andi Osho, Abigail McGibbon, Dearbháile McKinney, Neil Keery and Andrea Irvine also feature in the new episodes. Cathy Tyson returns as Dana Morgan, alongside Michael Smiley as intelligence officer Paul “Colly” Collins.

The return of Gerry, Jen and Jonty will form part of an episode answering important questions from the past, giving the new series a direct connection to storylines left behind during the show’s earlier chapters.

Created by Declan Lawn, Adam Patterson, Stephen Wright and Louise Gallagher, the six-part series is produced by Two Cities Television and Gallagher Films with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Angela Griffin directs the opening three episodes, with Sam O’Mahony directing the final three.

For CultureCues, Blue Lights has become one of the strongest police dramas on British television, and this first clip brings back the humour and everyday frustrations that make the series feel so grounded. Shane’s traffic stop is a small glimpse of what is ahead, but the return of Gerry and the promise of answers from the past give Series 4 plenty to look forward to. We will be tuning in when Blackthorn opens its doors again.

Blue Lights Series 4 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn.
