Anya Taylor-Joy is heading to Middle-earth. The official Lord of the Rings Instagram account has confirmed that Taylor-Joy has joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, writing: “Welcome to the hunt, Anya Taylor-Joy.” The film, which is set to arrive in cinemas on 17 December 2027, will be directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum.

Taylor-Joy is reportedly set to play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm described as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil. She joins a cast that already includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Lee Pace as King Thranduil. Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall are also among the new names attached to the film, while Jamie Dornan is set to take over the role of Aragorn, also known as Strider, from Viggo Mortensen.

Warner Bros. also unveiled a first-look image of Taylor-Joy as Seren. The mysterious elf is shown standing in a mist-covered ravine armed with a bow, offering fans their first glimpse of the new character. While little is known about Seren so far, the image hints that she could become a key player in the search for Gollum.

The Hunt for Gollum is expected to take place around the era of The Fellowship of the Ring, before Frodo leaves the Shire for Rivendell. The story centres on Gandalf sending Aragorn to track down Gollum, whose knowledge of the One Ring makes him a dangerous figure in the growing shadow of Sauron.

Taylor-Joy’s casting also marks another major Warner Bros. franchise role for the actor, following Furiosa and the Dune films. She has become one of the most recognisable stars of her generation, with credits including The Queen’s Gambit, The Witch, Split and The Menu.

For CultureCues, this is exactly the kind of casting that gets fantasy fans talking. The Hunt for Gollum already has huge expectations attached to it, and bringing Taylor-Joy into Middle-earth gives the film another major name with serious screen presence. Seren appears to be a new addition to the story, which makes the role even more interesting. If the film is expanding the world around Gollum’s pursuit, a Woodland Realm elf connected to Thranduil could be a very intriguing way in. Middle-earth is calling again, and we are absolutely listening.
