The Great British Bake Off is getting a new companion show, with Channel 4 announcing Second Helpings as a revamped replacement for Bake Off: An Extra Slice. Hosted by Jon Richardson and Judi Love, the new weekly series will air on the same night as The Great British Bake Off, giving viewers an immediate post-tent debrief rather than making them wait.

Channel 4 describes Second Helpings as a new-look companion show, with Richardson and Love joined by a celebrity guest each week to discuss the biggest moments, standout bakes and drama from the latest episode. The series will also include behind-the-scenes stories and contributions from Alison Hammond, Noel Fielding, Paul Hollywood and new Bake Off judge Nigella Lawson.

What Happened to Bake Off: An Extra Slice?

Channel 4 says Extra Slice has been revamped with a “brand-new shape and a brand-new home”, with Second Helpings taking over as the weekly companion programme. The new format keeps the idea of looking back at what happened inside the tent, but brings in a new presenting team and moves the show to the same night as the main series.

Bake Off: An Extra Slice was previously fronted by Jo Brand, with Tom Allen also becoming a major part of the programme over the years. Richardson paid tribute to both while discussing his new role, joking that he felt sorry for whoever was asked to step into their shoes.

Who Hosts Bake Off: Second Helpings?

Jon Richardson will host Second Helpings, with Judi Love joining him every week. Both are already familiar with the Bake Off tent after previously competing on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer, although their baking records may not be the main reason Channel 4 has brought them back.

Each episode will also feature a celebrity studio guest, while the main Bake Off team will contribute behind-the-scenes stories and other details from the competition. Alison Hammond, Noel Fielding, Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson are all expected to appear across the series.

Love said she was excited to talk about the show, celebrate the bakes and, importantly, get involved with whatever cakes and treats happen to be available. Richardson, meanwhile, described Bake Off as an “institution” and praised the warmth and humour Jo Brand and Tom Allen brought to Extra Slice.

When Is Second Helpings on Channel 4?

Second Helpings will air weekly on Channel 4 on the same night as The Great British Bake Off. Channel 4 has not announced the exact transmission time or launch date. The same-night scheduling should make the new show feel more connected to each episode, with viewers able to go straight from the main competition into discussion of the bakes, disasters and whatever has happened in the tent that week.

For CultureCues, we really like the idea of having the companion show on the same night as Bake Off. Half the fun of watching is immediately talking about who smashed the technical, whose showstopper went wrong and which bake we would happily steal from the judging table, so Second Helpings feels like a natural place to keep that conversation going. Jon Richardson and Judi Love should also be a very fun pairing, and with Nigella Lawson joining the main series too, there is plenty changing in the Bake Off world this year.
