The BBC has officially renewed Ann Droid for a second series after the Diane Morgan comedy became one of the broadcaster’s biggest new scripted hits of 2026. The six-part comedy will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer following a hugely successful first run, with episode one attracting 7.6 million viewers within 28 days and rising to 8.1 million viewers to date. That made Ann Droid the BBC’s second biggest new scripted launch of the year so far, behind Small Prophets, and the biggest launch of a new BBC series among 16 to 34-year-olds across all genres since The Celebrity Traitors. The renewal was announced during the BBC’s Spotlight session at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
What Is Ann Droid About?
Created by Diane Morgan and co-written by Morgan and Sarah Kendall, Ann Droid stars Sue Johnston as Sue, an older woman whose son Michael, played by Paul Ready, buys her a second-hand Ann Droid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot to help her continue living independently. Morgan plays the robot, Linda, and although Sue is initially reluctant to have her around, the pair gradually form an unlikely friendship as Sue adjusts to later life with Linda and her repeated “Sue, Sue, Sue” by her side.

Morgan said the response to the first series had taken the team by surprise. “The response to Ann Droid has been so incredible. We’re all totally blown away. I’m really looking forward to not blinking, needing physio and hearing Cotton Eye Joe on repeat.”
Johnston added: “I am so unbelievably happy that we are to do another series! Great script, great cast, great crew. The reaction from the public has been wonderful. Even my doctor called me Sue, Sue, Sue this morning! Everyone has been asking if there will be more and now we can tell them! Yippee.”
Shane Allen, executive producer for Boffola Pictures, joked: “We marvel at our BBC robot overlords and their impeccable decision making. Diane and Sue are comedy dynamite, fronting a superb cast. We’re all overwhelmed by how much the audience has taken the show to their hearts.”
Emma Lawson, Interim Director of BBC Comedy, said Morgan and Kendall had created “such a warm, relatable, and uniquely funny comedy that audiences in their millions have fallen in love with,” adding that Linda and Sue had quickly become two of the BBC’s most-loved new comedy characters.
When Will Ann Droid Season 2 Be Released?
The BBC has not yet announced a release date for Ann Droid Season 2, but the new run will again consist of six 30-minute episodes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Morgan and Kendall return as writers, with Morgan executive producing alongside Shane Allen and Pippa Brown for Boffola Pictures and Witchcraft Industries.

The friendship between Sue and Linda gives the series so much heart without losing Morgan’s wonderfully strange sense of humour, so we are very happy there will be another six episodes of “Sue, Sue, Sue” on the way.
