Dark Matter is finally returning to Apple TV for Season 2, more than two years after Joel Edgerton’s Jason Dessen first disappeared into a maze of alternate realities. The new season premieres on Friday, 28 August 2026, and this time Apple is changing the launch slightly: unlike Season 1, which began with two episodes, Season 2 will open with just Episode 1 before moving to weekly Friday releases.

The Dark Matter Season 2 finale will arrive on Friday, 30 October 2026, bringing the 10-episode run to an end just before Halloween.
How Many Episodes Are in Dark Matter Season 2?
Season 2 contains 10 episodes, one more than the nine-episode first season. Rather than releasing the entire season at once, Apple TV is sticking with a weekly schedule, meaning the season will run for just over two months from its August premiere to the end of October.

Joel Edgerton returns as Jason Dessen alongside Jennifer Connelly as Daniela, Oakes Fegley as Charlie, Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas, Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton Vance and Amanda Brugel as Blair Caplan. Brugel has been promoted to a series regular for Season 2, with Chris Diamantopoulos also joining the cast in a recurring role.
What Is Dark Matter Season 2 About?
Apple’s official description reads: “Season two picks up with the Dessens as they settle into a quiet life in a world that finally seems safe until the unimaginable forces them to run once again. As Jason’s obsession with the Box deepens, Daniela’s growing paranoia pushes her to the brink, threatening to tear their fragile stability apart. Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. With Blair determined to stop him, Leighton relentlessly chases his grand vision of creating a perfect world.”
Season 1 adapted Blake Crouch’s bestselling 2016 novel, but Season 2 will move beyond the events of the original book, with Crouch continuing as creator, showrunner and writer. That makes the new season especially interesting for book readers too, as the series is now moving into completely new territory.
When Is the Next Dark Matter Season 2 Episode?
Dark Matter Season 2 premieres with Episode 1 on Friday, 28 August. Episode 2 follows on Friday, 4 September, with a new episode then arriving every Friday until the finale on 30 October.
For CultureCues, we absolutely loved Dark Matter Season 1, so we have been waiting a long time for this return. With the series now moving beyond Blake Crouch’s original novel, Season 2 takes us somewhere completely new, and we are very excited to see what comes next.
