Christmas is about to get violent again. Tommy Wirkola’s sequel arrives four years after the original film followed an embittered Santa using his combat skills to rescue a family from armed mercenaries. This time, he has lost his magic, forgotten the meaning of Christmas and found himself trapped and under attack. When Is Violent Night 2 Released?
Violent Night 2 will be released in UK cinemas on Friday, 4 December 2026, placing the action sequel firmly within this year’s Christmas film season. Universal Pictures has not yet confirmed when the film will become available digitally or begin streaming. Its cinema release arrives almost exactly four years after the original Violent Night opened in December 2022.
What Is Violent Night 2 About?
The sequel finds Santa facing ruthless gangster Mason, played by Jared Harris, who is terrorising the shopkeepers and visitors inside the Silver Bell Mall. Unfortunately, Saint Nick is dealing with a crisis of his own after forgetting the true meaning of Christmas and losing access to his magical powers.
Stranded without the abilities he usually depends on, Santa must find another way to protect the people inside the shopping centre before time runs out. That means relying on his fighting skills, whatever Christmas decorations can be turned into weapons and some last-minute assistance from Mrs. Claus.
The official synopsis reads: “Saint Nick suits up again to take on a ruthless gangster (Jared Harris) terrorising the merchants of the Silver Bell Mall. But when Santa forgets the true meaning of Christmas, he finds himself in the heart of a lively mall community in desperate need of his help. Sapped of his magic, he’ll need another way to take on the goons threatening the mall, and time is running out. Santa has to rediscover his faith in goodness and call in some last-minute reinforcements from the one person no baddie wants to tangle with: Mrs. Claus (Kristen Bell).”
What Happens in the Violent Night 2 Trailer?
The first trailer opens with Santa discovering that he has been placed on the naughty list, leaving him powerless and questioning what Christmas means to him. He soon finds himself working inside the Silver Bell Mall when Mason and his armed gang take control of the building.
Set to ‘Last Christmas’, the footage promises another round of brutal festive action. Santa attacks criminals with cookie cutters, flaming arrows and anything else he can find, with one unfortunate henchman’s head bouncing across a giant floor piano.
The shopping-centre setting gives the sequel plenty of Christmas imagery to weaponise, from Santa’s grotto decorations to the mall’s festive displays. Wirkola has explained that removing Santa’s powers allowed the team to give him bigger physical challenges and explore who he is without Christmas magic.
The biggest moment is near the end as Kristen Bell makes her entrance as Mrs. Claus. Armed with a katana and hammer, she immediately proves that her husband is not the only member of the family capable of delivering some extremely violent Christmas justice.
Who Is in the Violent Night 2 Cast?
David Harbour returns as Santa Claus, with Kristen Bell joining the franchise as Mrs. Claus and Jared Harris playing the film’s main antagonist, Mason. The cast also includes Joe Pantoliano, Daniela Melchior, Andrew Bachelor and professional wrestler Maxwell Friedman. Further information about their characters has not yet been announced. Bell’s Mrs. Claus will not follow the familiar image of someone remaining at the North Pole and baking cookies. Director Tommy Wirkola described her as a strong fighter who brings humour and humanity to the story, with the film also exploring her history with Santa.
Who Is Making Violent Night 2?
Tommy Wirkola returns to direct after leading the original film, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller once again writing the screenplay. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch produce through 87North, the company behind action films including Bullet Train, The Fall Guy, Atomic Blonde and the Nobody franchise.
The sequel was filmed inside and around a real shopping centre in Winnipeg, Canada. The production transformed its upper level into Santa’s Village and used the mall’s existing shops to create the Silver Bell setting. Wirkola has also confirmed that the film will explore more of Santa’s Viking history after parts of that backstory were removed from the first instalment.

For CultureCues, the first Violent Night 2 trailer looks completely unhinged in the best possible way. David Harbour remains perfect as a Santa who would rather throw a punch than deliver a present, and taking away his powers should make every fight even more difficult. The shopping-centre setting gives the sequel plenty of festive toys to play with, and seeing cookie cutters, floor pianos and Christmas decorations turned into weapons tells us exactly what kind of film we are getting. Kristen Bell’s arrival as a sword-wielding Mrs. Claus may be the best surprise, and we cannot wait to see the couple fight side by side.
This sequel looks bigger, bloodier and fully prepared to embrace the madness of its premise. Santa may be on the naughty list, but Violent Night 2 has already earned a place on our Christmas watchlist. Naughty or nice? We are hoping for plenty of both.
