Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2 has officially set its Starz premiere date. The romantic prequel series will return on 18 September, with Starz also releasing the first teaser for the new season today, 1 June, to mark World Outlander Day. The date marks the anniversary of Diana Gabaldon’s first Outlander novel, making it a very fitting day for fans to get fresh news from the wider Outlander universe.

Season 1 introduced viewers to the love stories of Claire and Jamie’s parents, following Julia Beauchamp, played by Hermione Corfield, and Henry Beauchamp, played by Jeremy Irvine, as well as Brian Fraser, played by Jamie Roy, and Ellen MacKenzie, played by Harriet Slater, across different time periods.

After Henry and Julia were separated in 18th century Scotland, the first season ended with the pair finally reunited at the standing stones of Craigh na Dun. They hoped to return to their own time and their young daughter, Claire, but the new teaser suggests things have not gone smoothly. The footage shows Julia alone with their baby, while Henry is left struggling after being separated from the woman he loves.

Brian and Ellen also return after their forbidden relationship faced huge pressure from both families. Their escape was interrupted by the beginning of the 1715 Jacobite Rising, pulling the clans towards war and forcing the couple to reckon with duty as well as desire.

The cast also includes Tony Curran as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie, Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie, Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan. Matthew B. Roberts serves as showrunner for both Outlander and Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

For CultureCues, this is very welcome news. We loved Outlander, really enjoyed the first season of Blood of My Blood, and we’re very happy to see it heading back to our screens. There’s also an extra wee bit of joy, as a Scottish writer, in seeing the series return to the Highlands while continuing to explore the family history behind Claire and Jamie. Standing stones, forbidden love and a September return date? Aye, we’ll be watching.
