HBO has released the final trailer for House of the Dragon season 3, and Westeros is not exactly entering its calm era. The new trailer, released on 29 May, offers a fiery look at the next chapter of the Game of Thrones prequel, as the Dance of the Dragons moves fully into open war. Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy, appears ready to claim King’s Landing, while Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, is seen in the middle of the bloodshed as the battle for the Iron Throne grows even more brutal.

Season 3 will continue the civil war between the Blacks and the Greens, with Rhaenyra still fighting for the crown and Aegon II, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, remaining a dangerous figure in the conflict. The trailer also puts Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell, firmly in the spotlight, with Vhagar once again making the case that one dragon can cause a truly unreasonable amount of damage.

The footage shows King’s Landing under threat, dragons flying over the city, banners being torn down and Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, warning that “the crown is a weight that crushes.” It is exactly the kind of line House of the Dragon does best, especially when this family keeps proving it true.

There are also glimpses of major battle sequences, including ships burning at sea and dragons being used as weapons on a huge scale. With the Dance of the Dragons now fully underway, season 3 appears ready to bring the Targaryen war to its most devastating stage.

For CultureCues, this is exactly the kind of final trailer fans have been waiting for. Political scheming can only hold for so long, and House of the Dragon has always been building towards the point where years of family resentment finally turn into fire. The footage suggests season 3 is ready to make Westeros pay for every bad choice made in the Red Keep. At this point, the Iron Throne might be the worst job in television. Great chair, terrible work-life balance. Either way, we’ll be tuning in. Probably stressed, but tuning in.

House of the Dragon season 3 premieres on HBO and HBO Max in the US on 21 June. In the UK, the new season streams weekly from 22 June on NOW and Sky Atlantic.
