The Punisher: One Last Kill arrives on Disney+ in the UK on Wednesday 13 May, bringing Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a new Marvel Television Special Presentation. The special debuts in the US on Tuesday 12 May at 6pm PT / 9pm ET, which means UK viewers can watch from 2am BST.

Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the special follows Frank as he searches for meaning beyond revenge, only for an unexpected force to pull him back into the fight. Disney+ lists the project as an 18+ title, with genres including superheroes, action and adventure, thriller and crime.

It is about time, too. Bernthal’s Punisher has long been one of Marvel’s most intense screen presences, and One Last Kill finally gives Frank Castle top billing inside the current MCU space. After returning in Daredevil: Born Again, the character now gets a standalone story that looks set to dig into what happens when a man built around vengeance starts asking what comes next.

Marvel has confirmed that Green directs from a script co-written by himself and Bernthal, giving the project a more personal stamp from the actor who has carried the role across multiple Marvel eras. Bernthal has also spoken about wanting this version of Frank to move beyond the spiral of revenge and towards something closer to justice, with the special picking up with the character in a bleak, uncertain place.

That is the interesting hook here. The Punisher has never exactly been light viewing, but One Last Kill seems ready to dig into what Frank’s violence has cost him, rather than treating his brutality as the whole point. His life has been shaped by grief and punishment, but this special could push him towards a more complicated question: what comes after revenge?

For CultureCues, this feels like the right way to bring Frank Castle back into focus. A contained special gives The Punisher room to go hard without stretching the story across a full season, while still leaving space for Marvel to decide where he fits next. Skull-adorned body armour at the ready, basically.

The Punisher: One Last Kill streams on Disney+ in the UK from Wednesday 13 May.
