Netflix has released the trailer for The Boroughs, a new eight-part supernatural mystery series executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer. The series premieres on Netflix on 21 May 2026, with eight hour-long episodes set inside a seemingly perfect retirement community in the sun-drenched New Mexico desert.

Alfred Molina stars as Sam Cooper, a retired aeronautical engineer and grieving widower whose arrival at The Boroughs soon gives way to a terrifying discovery. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Sam’s encounter with something monstrous leads him to join a misfit group of unlikely heroes, who begin to uncover a dark secret hiding beneath the community’s polished surface.

The trailer opens with The Boroughs being sold as “a special town just for grownups,” where residents are promised the time of their lives. But the cheerful welcome tour quickly turns sinister, as Sam begins seeing “impossible things” and realises that something may be stalking the manicured cul-de-sacs.

Molina leads a stacked ensemble cast that includes Geena Davis as Renee, a rock ’n’ roll former music manager who refuses to be sidelined; Alfre Woodard as Judy, a former journalist whose instincts tell her the community is hiding something; Denis O’Hare as Wally, a retired doctor using humour to keep fear at arm’s length; Clarke Peters as Art, a spiritual seeker at the heart of the group; and Bill Pullman as Jack, the life-of-the-party neighbour trying to turn the residents into a found family.

The wider cast includes Carlos Miranda as Paz, Jena Malone as Claire, Seth Numrich as Blaine, Alice Kremelberg as Anneliese, Ed Begley Jr. as Edward, Dee Wallace as Grace, Rafael Casal as Neil, Beth Bailey as Kayleigh, Karan Soni as Toby and Jane Kaczmarek as Lilly.

The series comes from creators, showrunners and executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, whose previous work includes The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. In Netflix’s press materials, the pair describe the show as a collision of monsters, vintage Americana and the question of what people do with the time they have left. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer executive produce.

Matt Duffer has drawn a clear line between The Boroughs and Stranger Things, noting that both series follow unlikely heroes facing something extraordinary and supernatural. The difference here is that instead of kids on bicycles, The Boroughs gives us older residents on golf carts, which honestly might be even better.

For CultureCues, The Boroughs looks like Netflix putting a refreshing spin on the supernatural ensemble drama. The trailer has monsters, mystery and a dark secret buried in the desert, but the real hook is its group of older misfits being pushed into hero mode after a lifetime of being underestimated.
