Video: Elle – Official Teaser | Prime Video via YouTube

Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for Elle, its new Legally Blonde prequel series starring Lexi Minetree as a teenage Elle Woods. Reese Witherspoon, who famously originated the role, serves as executive producer on the comedy series, which premieres on Prime Video on 1 July and takes viewers back to 1995 to explore the high school years that helped shape the future Harvard Law icon we first met in 2001.

Rather than picking up with Elle after the events of the original films, Elle goes right back to the beginning. The teaser finds her living in Bel-Air before her father’s new job forces the family to move to Seattle, meaning Elle has to swap her bright pink world for a much rainier, flannel-heavy one. Honestly, character growth has rarely looked so inconvenient.

The series follows Elle before she became the fish out of water at Harvard, as she navigates difficult friendships, forbidden romance, questionable fashion choices and the general emotional workout of being a teenager. The teaser also makes it clear that the bond between Elle and her mum will be a key part of the story, giving the prequel a more family-focused coming-of-age angle.

Minetree leads the cast alongside June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother, Eva, and Tom Everett Scott as her father, Wyatt. The cast also includes Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Zac Looker and Amy Pietz. Laura Kittrell created the series and serves as co-showrunner with Caroline Dries, while Reese Witherspoon executive produces through Hello Sunshine.

For CultureCues, the appeal is clear: pink, nostalgia, teen drama and a younger Elle Woods discovering the confidence audiences already know she’ll grow into. No pressure, then. Only one of the most beloved rom-com characters of the 2000s to live up to.

Elle premieres on Prime Video on 1 July.
