A24 has released the first trailer for The Invite, Olivia Wilde’s new film starring Seth Rogen, Wilde, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton.

Part comedy, part relationship drama, the film follows Joe and Angela, a married couple whose relationship is already under strain when a dinner party with their enigmatic upstairs neighbours takes a turn neither of them quite expected. The trailer leans into that awkward, seductive tension, gradually revealing a setup that feels equally interested in marital unease, social performance and just how far one strange evening might go.

Wilde directs from a script by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, with Cruz and Norton playing the neighbours who send the evening in an increasingly unpredictable direction. Following its Sundance debut earlier this year, The Invite quickly became one of the festival’s most talked-about titles, with A24 later picking it up after a bidding battle.

For CultureCues, The Invite looks like one to keep an eye on, especially if the trailer is anything to go by, balancing discomfort, chemistry and dark humour in a way that feels both playful and a little dangerous.

The Invite opens in US cinemas on 26 June, before arriving in UK and Irish cinemas on 3 July via Black Bear.
