Francesca and Michaela’s love story takes centre stage

We have barely had time to recover from the latest season of Bridgerton, but Netflix is already moving things along. Season 5 is officially in production, and this time, the spotlight shifts to one of the show’s quieter, more intriguing characters: Francesca Bridgerton. Played by Hannah Dodd, Francesca steps into the lead role for the next chapter, with her story set to take the series in a fresh and meaningful direction. Alongside her is Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling, with the pair forming the central romance of the upcoming season.

A love story shaped by loss, longing and something new

Francesca’s journey picks up two years after the death of her husband, John. Still grieving, she returns to the marriage mart with a practical mindset, trying to move forward in the only way society really allows her to. It feels more like duty than desire, a step she believes she should take rather than what truly wants. But as always with Bridgerton, things are never quite that simple.

When Michaela returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate, old connections resurface and new feelings begin to take hold. What starts as familiarity quickly deepens into something more complicated, with Francesca caught between what she thinks she should want and what she actually feels. It is a story built on yearning, hesitation and emotional push and pull. The kind of slow-burn tension Bridgerton does best.

A first for the series, and long overdue

While Bridgerton has explored queer relationships before, Season 5 marks the first time a same-sex romance will sit at the heart of the story. It is a natural evolution for a show that has always played with the boundaries of its Regency setting, and one that feels both overdue and genuinely exciting. Hannah Dodd has already spoken about the importance of telling these stories, noting that queer love has long been absent from traditional period dramas despite always existing. Season 5 looks set to change that, placing Francesca and Michaela’s relationship front and centre rather than at the edges.

Two characters drawn together, whether they like it or not

Fans will remember that Francesca and Michaela’s connection was already quietly building in the previous season, even if neither of them was ready to fully face it. There is a shared understanding between them, shaped by grief, proximity and something harder to define. From early teasers, it is clear that dynamic will only intensify. Their relationship is described as one of deep emotional pull, with both characters navigating vulnerability in very different ways. Francesca tends to internalise, Michaela tends to run, which makes for a pairing that feels both fragile and inevitable.

What to expect from Season 5

The new season will run across eight episodes and is currently filming in the UK, with hints that the story could expand beyond London, potentially into the Scottish Highlands. Fans of the books will know just how important that setting could be for Francesca’s story, adding a more intimate, windswept backdrop to an already emotional journey.

Francesca’s arc is one of the more layered in the series, blending grief, identity and second chances. If the show leans into that, Season 5 could offer something slightly different from the grand romances that came before. Less about spectacle, more about feeling.

Every season of Bridgerton brings a new love story, but Season 5 feels like a particularly important one. Francesca has always been a quieter presence within the family, and giving her the spotlight opens the door to a more introspective, emotionally rich chapter for the series. For some viewers, the announcement may come as a slight surprise, with many expecting Eloise to take centre stage next. But if Bridgerton has proven anything, it is that the order of these love stories is never set in stone, and Francesca’s feels more than ready to be told.
