Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film officially has a title, with Netflix confirming that Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will bring C.S. Lewis’s origin story to the screen in 2027. Netflix has also released a new behind-the-scenes image of Gerwig directing the film and confirmed its cinema and streaming plans. The Magician’s Nephew will arrive in IMAX and cinemas worldwide in February before heading to Netflix in April, giving the new adaptation a theatrical run before its streaming debut.

It will be the first screen adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, with newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell leading a cast that includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep.

When Is Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Released?

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be released in cinemas worldwide on 12 February 2027, with special IMAX preview screenings beginning two days earlier on 10 February.

The film will then arrive on Netflix on 2 April 2027.

Gerwig confirmed the dates alongside the new first look, saying she “cannot wait” for audiences to see the film in cinemas before its Netflix release. Netflix will handle distribution in North America, while Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film internationally.

Netflix has not detailed every character alongside its latest announcement, so there are still plenty of casting details to come ahead of the film’s release.

Gerwig has written the screenplay as well as directing, with Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith and Gerwig producing. Patricia Whitcher, Douglas Gresham and Melvin Adams serve as executive producers for the C.S. Lewis Estate.

What Is Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew About?

The Magician’s Nephew tells the story of how Narnia itself was created, taking place before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Netflix’s official logline reads: “Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis’s beloved story The Magician’s Nephew to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia.”

The novel was published in 1955, five years after The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but takes place earlier in the chronology of the seven-book series. It explores the beginnings of Narnia and how the connections between the magical world and our own first came to exist.

For Gerwig, the book also has a long personal history. She has spoken about reading The Magician’s Nephew as a child and being fascinated by the idea of Aslan singing Narnia into existence, saying Lewis’s books made her believe in “magic and hidden worlds and adventure”.

Who Is Making the Music for Narnia?

Gerwig is also reuniting with two members of her Barbie team for the film’s music.

Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt will compose the original score for The Magician’s Nephew, while George Drakoulias serves as music supervisor. The wider creative team includes cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, production designer James Chinlund, costume designer Jacqueline Durran and creature effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan.
