The BBC has released the first look at Doctor Foster Season 3, with Suranne Jones back as Gemma Foster almost a decade after the drama was last on our screens. The five-part final series will arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2027, with Dustin Demri-Burns and Riot Women star Rosalie Craig among the new additions to the cast. The newly released image shows Gemma sitting at a dinner table as an argument appears to unfold around her, and it looks as though life has not become any quieter for the GP since we last saw her. Jones will reunite with Bertie Carvel as Simon Foster and Tom Taylor as their son Tom, with several more familiar faces now confirmed to return.
Who Is Returning for Doctor Foster Season 3?
Adam James returns as Gemma’s neighbour Neil, Thusitha Jayasundera is back as her friend and colleague Ros, and Anna Madeley returns as Lucy. They join Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor for the final series. It has been almost ten years since Doctor Foster last aired, with Series 2 ending in 2017 after Tom disappeared following the increasingly destructive breakdown of his parents’ relationship.
Who Is Joining the Doctor Foster Season 3 Cast?
Dustin Demri-Burns joins the series as Callum, Gemma’s new partner, and it sounds as though their relationship will be very important when the story begins. Rosalie Craig is also joining the cast in a currently undisclosed role. After her brilliant turn in Riot Women, we are particularly excited to see what she brings to Doctor Foster. The new cast also includes Gracie Oddie-James, Lois Baglin, Karima McAdams, Anjana Vasan, Michael Balogun, Christina Balmer, Justin Salinger and Ash Tandon.
What Is Doctor Foster Season 3 About?
Ten years have passed since Gemma discovered Simon’s affair and set in motion the events that eventually led to their son disappearing. Gemma is still working as a GP and living in the same house, but her personal life has finally moved forward. She has met Callum and is preparing to get married.
That fresh start does not appear destined to go smoothly. As the wedding approaches and friends and family begin gathering, people and events from Gemma’s past start resurfacing, threatening both her happiness and her reputation. Gemma once again finds herself trying to protect the people she loves and uncover who is determined to hurt her. The final series will also have to answer one of the biggest questions left hanging after Series 2: what happened to Tom?
When Is Doctor Foster Season 3 on BBC?
An exact release date has not yet been announced, but the BBC has confirmed that the third and final series will arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2027. There will be five episodes, each running for approximately 60 minutes. Filming is underway, so we should hopefully get a trailer and a confirmed date closer to release.
Who Is Making the Final Series?
Creator Mike Bartlett returns to write all five episodes and also serves as an executive producer. John Hardwick, whose previous credits include One Day and The Buccaneers, directs the series, with Nige Watson producing. Suranne Jones is also an executive producer through TeamAkers Productions. Drama Republic, the company behind Riot Women and One Day, produces the series in association with Fictional Company and TeamAkers Productions.
For CultureCues, we loved Doctor Foster when it first aired, so we were very happy to hear it was finally coming back. After almost a decade, it will be so good to see Gemma Foster on screen again and find out where her life has taken her. We are also very happy to see Rosalie Craig joining the cast after loving her in Riot Women. Gemma getting married and attempting a fresh start sounds almost suspiciously peaceful for Doctor Foster, so we cannot imagine that wedding day is going to go entirely to plan. We are very ready to be pulled back into the drama.
Doctor Foster Season 3 will consist of five episodes and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2027.
