Netflix has confirmed a global release date for Possible Love, the first film from acclaimed South Korean director Lee Chang-dong since 2018’s Burning. The relationship drama will begin streaming on 6 November 2026 after opening in selected cinemas on 23 October.
The film follows two married couples whose contrasting lives become increasingly intertwined. Mi-ok, played by Jeon Do-yeon, lives quietly with her young son and laid-off husband Ho-seok, played by Sul Kyung-gu. Their lives change when they meet documentary filmmaker Ye-ji, played by Cho Yeo-jeong, and her affluent husband Sang-woo, played by Zo In-sung.
Ye-ji is making a documentary about laid-off workers when Mi-ok agrees to be filmed. As the two women grow closer and Mi-ok finds herself drawn towards Sang-woo, repressed emotions and hidden desires begin to disrupt both marriages. Possible Love will receive its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival before screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. The 164-minute film is among the titles competing for the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice event.
The film is produced by Pinehouse Film, which previously backed Burning, alongside Anonymous Content and NOWFILM. Netflix has also unveiled the first poster and still, offering an early look at the four central characters and the unease developing between them.
The project reunites Lee with several previous collaborators. Jeon won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her performance in his 2007 drama Secret Sunshine, while Sul previously starred in Peppermint Candy and Oasis. Lee also co-wrote Possible Love with his Burning collaborator Oh Jung-mi.
Reflecting on his eight-year absence from filmmaking, Lee explained that he does not begin a project until he understands what it means to him, its audience and cinema itself. “Before I begin a film, I must be certain of what it means,” he said, adding that this was why Possible Love took so long to make.
For CultureCues, Possible Love is shaping up to be a compelling addition to Netflix’s autumn film slate. The cast brings together some of South Korea’s finest actors, while the reunion with Jeon Do-yeon and Sul Kyung-gu makes this an especially significant return for longtime fans of Lee’s work.
