Little House on the Prairie Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix, bringing Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved book series back to screen in a new adaptation. Inspired by Wilder’s semi-autobiographical novels, the new series follows the Ingalls family as they head west and attempt to build a new life outside the developing town of Independence. Netflix describes the series as a transformed adaptation of Wilder’s work, mixing intimate family drama with an epic survival story about life on the American frontier.

Season 1 is based on the third book in Wilder’s series, Little House on the Prairie, and follows Laura Ingalls, her sister Mary, their parents Charles and Caroline, and the family dog Jack as they face the realities of prairie life in the 1800s. Their new home brings hope and possibility, but also danger, with fever, wolves, fire and harsh living conditions all forming part of the family’s journey.

Alice Halsey stars as Laura Ingalls, with Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls. The cast also includes Warren Christie as John Edwards, Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann, Alyssa Wapanatâhk as White Sun, Meegwun Fairbrother as William Mitchell, Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle and Xander Cole as Little Puma.

The series also expands beyond the Ingalls family to include perspectives not fully explored in Wilder’s books or previous adaptations. As the family attempts to settle on land they have been told is “free,” they encounter the Osage people who have long called the prairie home. Netflix’s adaptation introduces the Mitchell family and their wider community, exploring the tension between the settlers’ hopes for a new life and the devastating impact of westward expansion on Indigenous communities.

"A family of four and a dog sit together by a campfire in a grassy field under a cloudy sky, surrounded by camping gear, suggesting a rustic outdoor setting and a calm, intimate atmosphere."

Julie O’Keefe, the show’s Osage cultural consultant, said the team heard a clear message from the Osage Nation: “If you’re going to tell the story, then you need to tell both sides.” That broader approach gives the new Little House on the Prairie a bigger scope, while still keeping the Ingalls family at the centre.

Showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine, whose credits include The Boys, The Vampire Diaries and Archive 81, has described the series as “a love story about a family.” She said the heart of Little House on the Prairie is a family who are there for each other, tell stories to each other and keep choosing one another through hardship. Sonnenshine also said the series is about people deciding who they want to be and looking for a better life, which feels central to this new adaptation.

This is still Laura’s story, but Netflix’s version appears to be looking at it with a wider lens, exploring what it means to build a new life when that opportunity comes at a cost for others.

The creative team also includes executive producers Joy Gorman Wettels, Rebecca Friendly, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel. Trip Friendly is the son of Ed Friendly, who executive produced the original Little House on the Prairie TV series after acquiring the rights to Wilder’s books. The new Netflix series continues that family connection, with Friendly Family Productions still involved in its screen legacy.

The original books have sold more than 73 million copies in more than 100 countries, while the earlier TV series has remained a comfort-watch staple for generations. Netflix’s new version arrives with a lot of history behind it, but also with a clear attempt to tell the story for a modern audience.

The show has already been renewed for Season 2, with Laura’s story set to continue in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. The next season will introduce Nellie Oleson, Laura’s famous rival, played by Willa Dunn, with Charlotte Sullivan joining as Margaret Oleson and Rachelle Lefevre as schoolteacher Eva Beadle.

For CultureCues, this is one for family drama fans, book lovers and anyone who enjoys a sweeping Netflix drama with heart. Little House on the Prairie has meant a lot to generations of readers, and this new adaptation brings Laura’s story back with a wider view of the world around the Ingalls family. This feels like an exciting return for the beloved story, and it is firmly on our watchlist. Review coming soon.
