Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the new feature-length animated film continuing the world of Nickelodeon’s original Avatar: The Last Airbender. The film will premiere globally on Paramount+ on 25 July rather than October as originally planned, bringing Aang and Team Avatar back in animated form for a new story set after the events of the original series.

Eric Nam voices Aang, joined by Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko and Dionne Quan as Toph. Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng and Ken Jeong also feature. Dee Bradley Baker returns as Appa and Momo.

The story follows Aang, the world’s last Airbender, as he learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he sets out to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens the peace they fought so hard to protect. In the trailer, Aang is still carrying the weight of being the last of his people, even after everything he has achieved as the Avatar. That changes when he discovers Tagah, an ancient airbender who may be able to help him bring Air Nomad culture back.

The film is based on the animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who also developed the story with Tim Hedrick and Kenneth Lin. Hedrick and Christopher Yost wrote the screenplay, with Lauren Montgomery directing alongside co-directors Steve Ahn and William Mata.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is the first film project from Avatar Studios, the division of Nickelodeon Animation Studio launched in 2021 to expand the wider Avatar universe.

For CultureCues, this is a big nostalgia moment. Avatar: The Last Airbender still has one of the most loyal animated fandoms around, and seeing Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko and Toph back in this world is genuinely exciting. The trailer has us very ready to return to Team Avatar, especially with the story digging into Aang’s connection to Air Nomad culture. Yip yip, we are seated.
