Scottish alt-rock band Neon Waltz have returned with “Send Me Down,” their first new music in three years, out now via Fierce Panda Records. The John O’Groats band’s new single arrives as they look ahead to the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Strange Hymns, next summer. Known for their melodic alt-rock sound and status as one of Britain’s most northerly bands, Neon Waltz return with a song shaped by major label frustrations, long roads, line-up changes and the decision to keep playing through it all.

Neon Waltz now return as a four-piece, with frontman and lyricist Jordan Shearer joined by Darren Coghill on drums, and Jamie Swanson and Kevin Swanson on guitar. Founding members Calvin Wilson and Liam Whittles, key to the band’s early rise and Strange Hymns era, have since departed.

The track was written by Shearer in a closed Edinburgh plant shop, where he found himself looking back over a decade of Neon Waltz and wondering what walking away would actually mean. Rather than closing the book, “Send Me Down” became a song about pushing through the rougher parts of the band’s story and choosing to keep going. “The whole song got written in one day and I think I even sent it to the boys that night, which is unlike me. I normally stew on songs,” Shearer said.

“It’s about the fear of drawing a line under Neon Waltz but not knowing what I would do with my time. Being just a guy who ‘used to be in that band’ but ‘Send Me Down’ is me coming to the realisation that I’m not gonna give it up just because it’s been a rough journey. You can’t just get everything you want in life easily. It would be worthless without the struggle.”

Their effort to stay connected with fans has always been part of the story too. Based in John O’Groats, the band have faced the kind of touring distances most acts never have to think about, with the road from home to London taking more than 12 hours and some tours pushing their van well beyond 2,000 miles.

Neon Waltz first broke through in the 2010s with tracks including “Dreamers,” before releasing Strange Hymns in 2017. The album received critical praise, with Record Collector calling it “left-field melodic beauty,” while the band’s wider influences, from The National and The Band to The Walkmen and Grizzly Bear, pointed to ambitions beyond straightforward indie-rock anthems.

Since Strange Hymns, Neon Waltz have continued to explore different shapes and structures through singles including “Friends Who Lost Control” and “Stranger Things.” Their second album, Honey Now, arrived in September 2023 after a long wait between records, moving into songs about “fears, loss and finding yourself,” with tracks such as “A Million People” and a full UK and Ireland tour marking another chapter for a band writing through frustration, feeling like outsiders and realising Neon Waltz as they knew it was changing.

For CultureCues, “Send Me Down” is a welcome return from a Scottish band who have clearly lived through every part of the story they are telling. The track has a great beat and a catchy drive, but it is the feeling behind it that stands out most: Neon Waltz are still here, writing with purpose and choosing the band again. After everything the band has pushed through, there is something genuinely satisfying about hearing them come back sounding this energised. Come on lads, we’re rooting for you.
